When I joined darkdose, I knew my first post would be dedicated to the Finnish band TENHI because it strikes such a personal tone on me musically. TENHI is a dark-folk band that emerged at the end of 1996 when Tyko Saarikko composed the first emotive Tenhi song. Currently, the band is a five member outfit with occasional session musicians (eg. the flute)

Since the purpose of this site is to help people discover new music, it seems fitting to post one of my discoveries of the last year. Having heard nothing more than a one line praise for the band, I chanced the purchase and ended up with a winner. It’s nice when that happens and it’s one of the reasons we started this blog.

Chile’s Mar de Grises (spanish for “Sea of Greys”) plays slow, heavy doom metal with eerie breakdowns and intense buildups. Most songs are long, moving through highs and lows and frequently battling the listener with a wall of sound. This dynamic quality is the hook which catches you and separates it from the sea of average doom.

Whenever people ask me to list my top five bands, I find it extremely difficult to do. When someone asks me to list my top five songs I find the task almost impossible. But if I were to do so, one song I would have no hesitation in naming is “For your Demons” by Saturnus. This is simply one of the most moving, beautiful and emotional songs I have ever heard. It comes across to me as completely sincere — drenched with heartache to the point that it is unavoidable to be consumed by it.

Proving we will push the envelope with an eclectic mix of dark music from the entire spectrum, today we shine the spotlight on a Stockholm, Sweden based band called Mynjun. I first heard about this band while traveling through Sweden this past November.
