Ed Alleyne Johnson and his electric violin came into my consciousness several years ago. A friend introduced me to him, knowing his unique blend of melancholic electric violin, digital delay and reverb would be right down my ally. It was — but for some reason I never followed up — and eventually, forgot about him. Thankfully, the same friend brought him up again in conversation recently, allowing me a second chance to investigate further.

As long as I remember I have had an infatuation with the ocean. Although I live quite far from the shore at this point in my life, it doesn’t take much concentration to remember the smell the saltwater and feel the waves crashing around me. It is of no surprise that many of my favorite songs and albums have to do the deep blue sea. One such album is “Oceanic,� by Isis.
