When the silence beckons, and the day draws to a close

AnathemaTonight’s contribution represents one of the most important songs in the world to me. If I were standed on a deserted island and could only choose 5 songs to have with me, “Inner Silence” by Anathama would be one. Without hesitation. The nearly spiritual experience of relating to a piece of music as if its yours is sacred. Music has shaped and defined my life. Anathema are one of the few bands responsible for this. While I cherish most of their releases, 1998’s “Alternative 4” goes where few albums can take me.

Perhaps the album just appeared at the right time in my life. There’s no doubt a heavy dose of nostaliga now elavates the music within to an even higher status. Regardless, the music on “Alternative 4″ is among the most emotionally powerful I’ve heard — despite the indelible memories they are tied to. This is an important album to me.

A rather unorthodox 3 minute lovelorn dirge entitled “Inner Silence” marks my favorite track. It also marks one of my favorite songs of all time. I can repeat this song over and over again without the impact diminishing. Everything is perfect — the piano, guitars, drums, dynamics, vocals, lyrics. Such a powerful statement, so few words:

When the silence beckons, and the day draws to a close - When the light of your life sighs, and love dies in your eyes - Only then will I realize, what you mean to me

Excellent CD. One of my favorite CDs as well! Great music entry. More people should know about this band and this CD. It’s a real masterpeice.

I have followed Anathema since beginning, well if you can think beginning being the Crestfallen ep. I like it hugely, then the actual album “serenity” wasn’t really so good. And then the Silent Enigma came and was totally… rocking? Anyway I like it a lot. Then “Eternity” which to me was somewhat disappointment. And then alternative 4 which was so totally awesome. I mean the singing is so much improved, the songs are amazing and so on. “Judgement” wasn’t really for me, for some reason but then “a fine day to exit” is enjoyable again. “a natural disaster” doesn’t really catch me. So it seems that every other album is brilliant and every other (to me) is merely good. It’s funny. But one of the nicest things about Anathema is that there is some element, to me most important the ringing, echoing guitars, which appear already on “crestfallen” and are still there on “a natural disaster”. (ok. I do realize that I’ve “forgotten” pentecost III. I never really listened it a lot, but I think I liked it, and it’s an ep, well so is crestfallen, but…)

alternative 4, or how the simplest words can have the deepest impact…
    “I hope you don’t understand”

Lull: Yes.. That line to me is so fucking powerful.

my favorite anathema song from my favorite anathema album. anathema, chris isaak, riverside, and death are among my favorite bands/musicians. there were some nice contributions while i was in vegas. that was nice to come home to.

  7. Trent says:

Anathema has been my favorite for a really long time. This is my favorite album by them, and Inner Silence practically brings me to tears every time I hear it.

  8. Liam says:

that was amazing. the only anathema album i have is the silent enigma. That pales in comparison to this.

  9. Andrew @ AVERSIONLINE says:

I actually don’t have this album yet as my Anathema collection is rather spotty, but this reminds me that I need to cut the shit and fill the gaps. The song “One Last Goodbye” off of “Judgement” still kills me more than any other Anathema tune, though! This is awesome, though. Such an amazing band they were for a good several years in their later-mid era.

Damn! This song was also extremely important to me.
Every time I here it, it takes me back to those sick stomach times.

  11. murat says:

cant find a word to say, marvellous!

  12. daniel t. says:

This is one of those albums which is also deeply embedded into my psyche. I think they are one of the few bands who have actually effected me in an inspirational way.
